Pollonaruwa

Welcome to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa found in the North Central Province, Sri Lanka’s oldest city after Anuradhapura where generations of kings ruled the island from the 11th– 13th century. It became a capital city in its own right for the first time, after the invasion of the Cholas and remained so for 77 years, thereby elevating its status and further establishing its roots as a core part of the island’s history. Its prominence was manifested due to a number of reasons which today can be traced back thanks to the labyrinth of spectacular ruins depicting the life and times of its people; places to visit in Polonnaruwa include gigantic temple structures, megalith statues of Lord Buddha as well as intricately constructed stupas, tombs and palaces. One can almost travel back in time standing in the midst of all this grandeur that was clearly once a thriving metropolis, whose success is owed it is said, to King Parakramabahu I. The king who brought about the ‘Golden Age of Polonnaruwa’ was far-thinking and intelligent which led him to construct the famed ‘Parakrama Samudra’ one of many irrigation systems that to this day support the region’s cultivations.

Polonnaruwa is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and also served as the backdrop to one of British band Duran Duran’s music videos, Save a Prayer. Towards the North of the city is the Quadrangle (Dalada Maluwa), Polonnaruwa’s once sacred attraction point rich with ancient artefacts and historical treasures. The Polonnaruwa Museum, The Lankatilaka, Gal Vihara, Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks are key fascinations that must be explored. Wildlife enthusiasts in particular will enjoy the ‘Elephant Corridor’ connecting the two parks together, where one can witness a breathtaking array of fauna in their habitat. The Elephant Gathering in Minneriya is a popular event, one which draws in tourists and locals alike. Explore Polonnaruwa in all its glory with Ulagalla by Uga Escapes.
