Sustainability at the heart of Uga

Our ancestors were ahead of their time. They constructed vast lakes, developed sophisticated irrigation systems, and turned sustainable agriculture into a science. At UGA we honor the traditions and sustainable practices of our forebearers.

At UGA, we connect travellers with serendipity and the authenticity of Sri Lanka, offering experiences with an aura of tradition and respect for the environment and the ancient culture that we feel privileged to bestow upon our guests.

Travelife Gold Certified

We are pleased to announce that all five Uga properties are now Travelife Gold Certified. This recognition reflects our efforts in putting sustainability at the forefront of everything we do. Our properties were borne out of a love for our culture and traditions, and by acting sustainably we are allowing our hotels, localities, and communities to flourish.

We can’t wait to see you

It feels wonderful to have our properties open and we look forward to welcoming you back, with new safety measures in place. Life may have made us more cautious. But this shouldn’t dampen your travel dreams.

At UGA, we will ignite your passion for travel and reawaken your adventurous spirit. Come stay with us, and experience the ‘home’ you never knew existed.

A very warm welcome awaits

Green spaces reimagined

Social distancing can make daily life feel both restricted and worrying. But at UGA, being socially distant from others is a part of the experience.

At UGA we offer plenty of natural open spaces for our guests to enjoy themselves and feel safe, and our rooms are comfortable, spacious cocoons for relaxing downtime. Nowhere feels crowded. Anything can be personalized to suit your preference for social immersion

Tourism is dependent on our communities and on the cultural and natural heritage of Sri Lanka. As responsible hosts, we continuously strive to contribute positively to the social and economic development of the regions in which we operate.

At UGA we have a strong focus on energy efficiency. Energy consumption at all of our properties consist primarily of electricity though each of our properties relies on renewable energy to significant degree.

We already use solar panels, and this year we saw a substantial increase in the use of low energy light bulbs. The transition to low energy light bulbs across our properties is nearly complete. Likewise, our properties now use key cards in all of the rooms. We have also increased the use of occupancy sensors or motion detectors to control lighting in intermittent use areas.

At UGA we are trained in waste management and the waste hierarchy: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

All of our properties have a dedicated waste sorting area and they all provide waste sorting facilities for guests in public areas. Moving forward, we would like to see a reduction in waste per guest per night in all of our properties.

We believe these reductions will be achieved through stricter waste management policies and more efficient recycling practices, as well as encouraging a greater awareness of these issues with our staff team

Many of you have asked about staff during the pandemic – thank you!

Our amazing people are what make UGA a family and you’ll see many of the same friendly faces across all five properties, ready with open arms to welcome you back.

It’s been a tough 18 months, however our team has worked tirelessly to keep the properties operating smoothly so that they may remain open. We are very proud of our team and look forward to busier days ahead and an opportunity for our staff to begin welcoming back clients with big smiles

The Green Movement

At UGA we ensure our rooms are as sustainable as they are comfortable. Some of the measures that we have introduced include:

  • Large windows for natural sunlight
  • Towel/linen reuse policy
  • Rechargeable Torches
  • Key Cards
  • Led bulbs
  • Refillable shampoo/lotion
  • Motion sensors
  • Non-ozone Depleting AC
  • Low-rise/design that is consistent with the local traditional style and is also respectful of the environment.

Committed to conservation

Over the last three generations, the Sri Lankan Elephant population has declined by as much as 50%. Listed as endangered by the IUCN, current estimates suggest there to be around 6,000 Sri Lankan Elephants left on the island. Habitat loss, and in particular, deforestation, has squeezed elephant ranges and brought them into conflict with rural communities.

At UGA we are working to protect Sri Lanka’s endangered Elephants through community-based conservation projects and scientific research. We absolutely love our guests getting involved.

Our strength is diversity

Our work ethic

At UGA we are fully committed to fostering an engaging, diverse and inclusive work environment. Our commitment is supported by a labour and human rights policy that sets out the guiding principles, our training programs and a system to review our performance. Up to 80% of our properties are situated in rural areas and our properties hire a majority of their employees locally. From our inception we have always prioritised hiring the general workforce from our local communities and we are proud to be providing opportunities for local youth and women, and will continue to make local hiring a priority.
