Sustainability at the heart of Uga – 2022

Posted - 15 Feb, 2022

“Our ancestors were ahead of their time. They constructed vast lakes, developed sophisticated irrigation systems, and turned sustainable agriculture into a science. At Uga we honor the traditions and sustainable practices of our forebearers.

At Uga, we connect travellers with serendipity and the authenticity of Sri Lanka, offering experiences with an aura of tradition and respect for the environment and the ancient culture that we feel privileged to bestow upon our guests”

A better world

Climate change is a global threat that requires a united response. At Uga we take our role in this response very seriously. We lead by example by being as transparent as possible about the actions we take to mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure our suppliers are familiar with our code of conduct. Some of our activities include holding regular staff training sessions, reducing non-recyclable produce purchases, and working to improve on the efficiency of our energy and water consumption. By buying local we support our rural communities and reduce carbon emissions.

Meet the GM

Neranjan, the General Manager of Jungle Beach and Uga Bay, is our man of the month!

With over 30 years working within the hospitality industry, Neranjan’s career may have taken him across the world – from Greece to Malaysia, and many countries in between – but he feels very much at home on Sri Lanka’s east coast. He has worked with Uga since 2013 and loves sports and cooking. His top tip? “Always plan for the unexpected… (and) do whatever possible to care for the environment”.

Protecting our future

Children are to be nurtured and protected, and safeguarding our future generation is of the utmost importance to us all at Uga.

Our staff participate in child protection training with a view to ensuring the safety not only of children within our resorts but also those in our local villages and wider community.

Cuisine at Residence

The Uga experience is synonymous with innovative kitchens and fusion cuisine. Our chefs are masters at creating gourmet journeys by crafting menus of dishes that champion locally sourced ingredients.

At Uga Residence, one of our most unique and best-loved dishes is our Mung Dhal Wellington recipe, which comes with wild garlic panna cotta and beetroot puree. To try it, visit Rare at Residence or for more foodie inspiration, follow our Instagram page @rarebarkitchen for this and other recipes.

Tourism is dependent on our communities and on the cultural and natural heritage of Sri Lanka. As responsible hosts, we continuously strive to contribute positively to the social and economic development of the regions in which we operate.

Community Carols

We invited some young women from our local community to join in with our Christmas celebrations at Jungle Beach.

They got involved by lighting up the resort’s Christmas tree and singing Christmas carols.

Guests present at the resort could enjoy this festive carol session and many of them went on to gift money to the girls, all of whom came from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Women in our workforce

Uga is committed to offering equal opportunities for men and women in Sri Lanka. Dilrukshi, who joined Ulagalla in 2010 as a Housekeeping Assistant, is one of Uga’s female associates who made the most of hers.

Born, raised and schooled in the local village of Athungama, the hard work and dedication of this mother-of-two has seen her ascend through a variety of junior front of house positions before reaching her current role as Asst Front Office Manager.

Night walks at Ullagala

Ulagalla is surrounded by rich biodiversity. A variety of habitats – from woodland to paddy fields and lakes – supports a wide range of wildlife.

We see some of our resident creatures regularly – such as the mouse deer, langur monkeys and fishing cats – yet we have recently discovered a healthy population of Grey Slender Loris, an elusive bulbous-eyed nocturnal primate.Opportunities to sight them in the wild are rare, which gave rise to our newest experience at Ulagalla – guided night walks.

“We can’t just consume our way to a more sustainable world.” – Jennifer Nini
