Whale and Dolphin Watching in Sri Lanka

Boasting 27 cetacean species – from the giant blue whale to the gregarious, acrobatic spinner dolphin – resident or migrant in its territorial waters, whale and dolphin watching in Sri Lanka is very well known. At Trincomalee, a kilometres-deep submarine canyon commencing within metres of the shore creates plankton-rich upwelling that attracts blue whales and Bryde’s whales in abundance, as well as large squid and the sperm whales that live on them. Oceanic dolphins and even pilot whales are also to be spotted at Trinco, while Trincomalee lagoon and the elaborate system of deep coves and inlets that Lord Nelson called ‘the finest natural harbour in all the world’ sustain an incredible diversity of marine and littoral species. Uga Jungle Beach, Kucchaveli, makes a perfect base for whale-watching adventures off Trincomalee.
